The numbers in the table are the first and last notes printed in the given month for the given FRB. Serial numbering in this series does not begin at 00000001A in each district, but rather continues on from the last serial used for Series 1969C. Colors indicate the production method: COPE notes are listed in black and conventional ones in green (for an explanation, see the page on COPE and conventional serials). When printing of this series began, serial numbers in each block ran all the way up to 99999999, but the maximum was later reduced to 99840000. Block changes which take place at 99840000 rather than 99999999 have been indicated in the table by a caret (<). Thus for example the G..C block runs up to G99999999C, followed by G00000001D; but the D..B block runs only up to D99840000B, followed by D00000001C.

End Series 1974 $5

The Boston range listed in italics is missing from the BEP reports. It appears that these notes were in fact printed, so I've inserted them into the table in approximately their correct location.

Series summary

Monthly production data for this series is not presently available before August 1976. According to BEP records, notes of this series were delivered to the Federal Reserve between September 1974 and April 1978.

The table below first breaks down the regular serial number ranges for each district by their production method, and then shows the serial number ranges produced for the star notes in this series. Notice that gaps of 160,000 serials occur frequently in the star notes during the earlier part of the series; these are due to the print runs of mixed regular and star notes that are necessary to complete each block of regular notes (since 100,000,000 notes equals 156.25 print runs of 640,000 notes each). Notice also that many of the later print runs of star notes in this series were partial ones; the BEP began to print such partial runs routinely in mid-1977. For the number of sheets printed in each partial run, see the monthly table above; for details of the numbering used for such partial runs, see the explanation as referenced in that table.

Notes

The ranges shown in italics are listed as conventional in some sources and COPE in others. Reports of actual notes which would settle the production method of these ranges would be appreciated.

A gap of 160,000 serials exists in the L..* printings, but its precise location is not known.

Many (likely all) of the notes with serials J 361 20001 B through J 361 40000 B are mismatched serial errors: In the right-hand serial number, the second digit '6' is replaced by a '5'.
