This is a probably hopeless attempt to locate all the gaps in the serial number ranges of 1953-series $5 SC and USN star notes by process of elimination. The gaps occur each time the regular (non-star) notes complete a block: Since a block contains 100,000,000 notes, and this number is not an even multiple of either the original 144,000-note standard print run or the later 360,000-note standard print run, it is necessary to complete each block with a print run of mixed regular notes and stars, creating an incomplete run of star notes. The following list gives the serial number range for the first group of notes in each print run of stars. This is the part of the run that would not be printed as stars if it was instead used to complete a block of regular notes. By collecting reports of extant star notes in all but a few of these ranges, it might be possible to identify which print runs actually contain gaps. If you have a star from an unreported range, please email me the series and serial number at webmaster@uspapermoney.info. * 283 60000 A * 283 19176 A {reported by Jamie Y.} . . . Due to the discontinuance of silver certificates, only the early printings of this series were released to circulation; later printings were destroyed unissued. Nine runs of stars were printed, from * 280 80001 A to * 313 20000 A. One of these runs presumably had a 280,000-note gap, corresponding to regular run F278A; but which star run had this gap cannot now be determined. All observed stars are from run 79A. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SERIES 1953C SC $5 (signatures Granahan-Dillon) This series was likewise printed but never released. Twelve runs of stars were printed, from * 313 20001 A to * 356 40000 A; again, one presumably had a 280,000-note gap, corresponding to run G278A, but it is no longer possible to determine which one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the $2 USN and $10 SC, no serial number gaps should exist, since neither completed a full block of regular notes during the 1953 series. I only need to find the points at which the regular and star notes change print run size during Series 1953. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /-----------------------------------------------------------------------\ | 1953 USN $2 Regular note Star note | | Highest found @ 144,000: A 121 87352 A * 014 29184 A [DP] [DP] | | Lowest found @ 360,000: A 123 82529 A * 014 59006 A [mine] [DP] | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | 1953 SC $10 Regular note Star notes all at | | Highest found @ 144,000: A 028 31028 A (Ebay) 144,000 according | | Lowest found @ 360,000: A 029 62860 A (Ebay) to BEP data. | \-----------------------------------------------------------------------/ (1953 $2 * 009 29807 A from position N listed on Ebay (tiny scan).
